Weather Dancer Wind Turbine

Capital Power’s Weather Dancer 1 Wind Turbine was developed through a joint venture between the Peigan Indian Utility Corporation Capital Power. It is EcoLogoTM certified with a capacity of 900 kW.

The Weather Dancer is an integral part of the Okaan (Sundance), a ceremony maintained by traditional Blackfoot. Now, and in times past, the Piikani (Peigan) would gather for the Okaan to honor the Creator. On the final day of the ceremony, the Weather Dancer fulfilled his sacred obligations by dancing for the Earth, our life source. It is his time to dance for the Creator, to ask for good weather and rain to replenish the Earth.  He is dancing for life itself. A prominent warrior also recounts stories of bravery and courage. At the end of each story, the Weather Dancer dances forward four times, blowing the eagle bone whistle into the spirit world, calling for good medicine.

Like the Sacred Cottonwood used for the centre pole of the Sundance Lodge, the Weather Dancer 1 turbine symbolizes the Peigan people looking to the natural elements for prosperity.
